NFGC New motor/ PSU drive
Didn't have the nerve to tear apart the Nordic bred KSV motor worm unit, so I made it simpler and went for the expendable ELVI 59 Italian kiddie motor instead. Found a 5 mm O-ring still lying around at work, (spare part to a 1" video recorder we scrapped 20 years ago - anyone remember those?) Winged a few 1,6:1 ratio pulleys in the lathe: cut a V-groove in an old TASCAM 1/4" tape recorder flywheel & turned down a piece of PC glass to the motor end. Jerry-rigged a makeshift motor holder, and a temporary wiring. -"Feuer!" So: I've got some 2560-ish rpm, hence 102 m/min at the hob end given 12 V (and 28W in for starters) - good for the first rough cut "accompanied" by a square wave F3 tone... For the last finishing sweep I guess I'll toss in another series connected Dell DA-2 PSU. The IT guys filled the bin a year ago with'em. Great to have a bunch (i.e. 7-8 ) of these 12V, 18 A supplies around for occations like these - right? // On second thought: The Meccano gears seemed a little upset at the test revs produced just now- so perhaps I'll wait for the first round of gears to replace them in the MkII before cranking the rig over 5K rpm? My diy acetal cutter/ worm bearings will hold up though: with a 4mm axle the bearing will melt at app 12K rpm. The Power Bricks will deliver the amps 'til the Elvi-baby welds itself shut (it'll max out at a 1/2 kW). -Stick around, and perhaps You'll be half as amazed as I will?
