Bert Love Crane Sunday Times 23-03-80

Here are scans of the photographs and text of an article entitled "The Making of Meccano Man" from the Sunday Times magazine of March 23rd 1980.

This article is entirely about Meccano and Bert Love in particular. It is interesting to compare the photo with the earlier picture from The Observer Magazine of November 1969. A number of improvements have been made.

It is also of interest that the date of the article is soon after the end of the workers' sit-in at Binns Road and reference is made to production moving to France.

A number of changes were also made post-1980. The most obvious is the controller, which changed to a flatter version with slide switches. Possibly the base-board and rails as well? There are numerous other smaller mechanical changes and the model still has the scars where previous mechanisms were not completely removed. The model has not been run much since it was powered up for Skegness c.2000, so deserves a run this summer for sure.

I see what you mean now! In fact, I remember thinking that too but resisted the temptation to change it.

Hi Bob,
This Observer article is 1980 (I remember getting it at home) but the other one is 1969. The 1969 version of the crane doesn't have any lights on it whereas the 1980 does. I believe the model did evolve over the years. It now resides in Hampshire.

Shouldn't the date for the Observer photo be Nov 1969?
