Manchester Corporation Tramways Parcel Van - Geoff Devlin
The parcel service started in 1905. It undertook to deliver, on the same day, any parcel handed to a guard on any of the passenger trams going into the city. The latest time on the day was 3.45pm and for Salford and other suburbs it was 12.45pm. Morning shoppers in the city centre coulc have parcels delivered in the afternoon, on a 'Cash on Delivery' basis.
The fleet of seven vans collected from the main depot at Parrs Wood garage at east Didsbury. The parcels were dropped off at principle stops or termini, to wooden sheds, staffed by an adult supervising a group of boys. The boys delivered them on hand trolleys to their final destination.
Each hut had heating, windows, seating etc and a covered yard for the trolleys. The sign on the front of the building had a white square with the words 'Manchester Corporation Tramways' round a red disc showing 'Parcel Office'.
The tram service was replaced by motor vans in the early 30s.
