Meccano model of a Motor Coach - Mike Burgess

SET 9 MODEL 9.8 Illustrated in the Meccano set 9 constuction manuals from 1949 to 1953.
Constructed of pre-used contemporary red and green parts of the correct era though the seats were made from pre-war blue/gold plates for colour effect.
The hub caps are stripped rusty ones burnished to a bright metal finish.
Built much as described but as the bodywork is composed mostly of perforated plates these have been 'plated' with flexible plates to reduce the perforated look.
Model has operating steering and opening door and boot lid. Rear wheels have some articulation allowing movement over slight humps.
It is powered by a No. 1 Meccano clockwork motor which propels the heavy model (about 10.5kgs) across a smooth floor.
For once the illustrations were reasonably accurate and with the seven useful ilustrations shown in the manual it went together fairly well. Most problematic areas were the roof corners and the boot panelling.
Other than protective washers only standard parts were used, 2 x 3" curved strips used for the rear wheel arch were the only extras.
The completed model has a pleasing chunky look which very well demonstrates the modelling possibilities of this quite large set which sadly is no longer in production.
