MILL ENGINE built by Howard Somerville
Howard proudly shows his first new model for years - to Terry Allen and John Bridger 1:6 scale modelof the Diamond Rope Works Engine built in 1914 by Scott and Hodgson It's mostly Meccano; the main crankshaft uses Dave Taylor's 5/16" large axle components (the 16" flywheel, by which the whole engine is back-driven, weighs several pounds) augmented by a few Stuart Borrill special parts. The multifarious small linkages in the valve gear needed something more compact than standard rod-and-strip connectors, so it was a moment of serendipity when I found a bag full of cut-down 212s which MeccaRep had produced for another steam engine, 14 years before.
