Although the photo is a bit dark, you may be able to make out a long grub screw which passes along the slot of the slightly opened up sleeve piece. This prevents the socket coupling assembly (a threaded coupling licked into the top and a small flanged wheel locked into the bottom as a foot) from rotating when the jack is driven, so it goes up and down instead.
