Chinese garden
The Garden of Mechanical Tranquillity was made in three sections and fully assembled only once, for the 2007 Melbourne Meccano Club exhibition. It was inspired by the Chinese Garden of Friendship in Sydney, but is a mixture of items copied from various gardens around the world. Chinese gardens contain many structures, making them suitable for Meccano. Plants do not dominate. They are integrated with other features—buildings, rocks and water. Buildings often feature bright colours. Red represents good luck. My garden’s entry gate was suggested by the Porcelain Arch at the Imperial College, Beijing. A Dragon Wall is often seen near the entrance to a Chinese garden (not many dragons would have a Meccano propeller for a tongue). Many Chinese gardens have a zig-zag bridge (evil spirits travel in straight lines) and a Moon Gate. Other structures in this model typical of major Chinese gardens include the Wind Temple of the Axle Rods, the Metal Pavilion of Water Viewing, and the Jade Pavilion of the Perforated Strips.
