To avoid the shadows (text on the rear of the scanned page) showing through, place a sheet of black paper against the back of the page being scanned.
Most scanner/copiers have a white inside face on the cover, which doesn't help this problem especially if the paper being scanned is thin & almost transluscent.
Thanks to P.N. Ross (an Auckland meccano person) for this suggestion back in the early 1980s.
Interesting document by the way.
