Jaguar XK120 - up to 1952
The Jaguar XK120 burst on the postwar scene in 1948, and immediately scooped the pool so far as I, then aged around 13, was concerned. It was s-o-o-o beautiful. I was pretty sure that it was never going to be part of our family, so the nearest thing for me was to build one in Meccano.
At that time, my Meccano collection was pretty meagre, to say the least. Nevertheless I managed to produce something which I think looked the part. It was unpowered, but included steering. No colour photos I fear but these pretty modest efforts are from my Ensign Ful-Vue 120 camera, which was scarcely worthy of the name.
The last image is of a recently discovered rebuilt version, and dating from 1952. I do not know exactly when I built the first version, only that it must have been before 1952 - and after 1948!

Thankyou Michael, but it seems I was a little older. The fine tuned date of this model build is now early 1952, when I was 16. |

It is very rare to see compound curves on a Meccano car, and in this case they are so well executed that the finished model is, like the prototype, a work of art. For a thirteen year old to achieve this level of realism in car bodywork modelling is exceptional. |
